Certificate Program: Producing Great Podcasts

Instructor

This workshop will be led by industry pioneer Jonathan Finkelstein, founder of the CSTP program, executive producer of LearningTimes, and author of Learning in Real Time (Wiley / Jossey-Bass).

Jonathan is host of the Real Time Minute, a regular online podcast program about synchronous collaboration and learning. He is also executive producer of numerous other podcasts, including the highly-acclaimed Green Room and several podcasts for groups like the New York City Department of Education, the New York Transit Museum and other educational and cultural institutions.

He coaches and consults with a variety of groups on bringing voice online and creating a sense of community that transcends place or distance. The son of two New York City public school teachers, Jonathan graduated with honors from Harvard University.

Program Details
In this three-part live online workshop -- taking place over a two week period -- participants learn and practice the practical skills and techniques they need to produce high-quality, highly engaging audio and video podcasts. The workshop offers concrete approaches for bringing each of the elements of a great podcast together. Participants finish with their first podcast recorded, edited and posted on their own podcasting site.

In addition to basic podcasting skills this certificate program will explore:

  • Establishing a concept and brand for your podcast series
  • Developing a sustainable format
  • Including appropriate calls to action
  • Choosing and developing a persona and establishing the podcast's personality
  • Using podcasts to foster a growing sense of community
  • Interacting with listeners and including audience feedback
  • Including remote guests
  • Using real-world, free and low-cost tools to produce your audio and video podcasts
  • Setting up and hosting a home page and presence for your podcasts

This course is comprised of three (3) live online sessions. In addition, there will be approximately 1 hour of homework prior to each session, although some students may choose to spend more time practicing and creating podcasts in between sessions.

This workshop takes place over a 2-week period, and includes 3 live 90-minute instructional webcasts. Approximately an hour of independent activity is suggested between sessions.

This certificate program is for anyone interested in creating their first podcast, or taking their initial forays into podcasting to the next level. Participants from all backgrounds are encouraged to participate, including: education, corporate organizations, community facilitators, museums, healthcare, associations, libraries, publishing and government agencies. The diversity of each set of workshop participants offers great perspective to all involved.
